Ruthless Romans!

Literacy
The non-fiction unit will be explanation texts. The children will focus on 'The Teacher-Pleaser Machine'. They will complete activities to learn the language and structure of the text and then innovate the model text to create their very own 'Teacher Pleaser Machine'. For the children's independent writing, they will invent a machine that will help the Roman soldiers complete their daily tasks. Why not investigate Wallace and Gromit's Cracking Contraptions at home to help with ideas!

Geography
We will be using the 8 points of the compass and four figure grid references to locate Roman forts along Hadrian's Wall. They will use maps to locate Hadrian's Wall in comparison with Amble

History
Who was Boudicca? Why is she an important woman in British history? The children will uncover the important part she play in the resistance against the Roman army. Find out more by watching the video link below.

Design and Technology
As part of the topic, the children will discover the Roman's use of catapults. They will look at designs from the Roman era and use this to design, make and evaluate their own Roman Catapults. Uncover fun ways of building a catapult using lolly sticks and elastic bands.

Mathematics
Throughout this half term, the children will focus on three main areas; consolidating the four operations linked to problem solving, money and statistics.
 
As well as this, the children will continue to develop their instant recall of the 3x, 4x and 8x table. Knowing times table facts and their corresponding division facts is extremely important. Spend time with your child at home to help them practise.  
Hit the Button is a great game to practise instant recall of times tables.
Science
We will be continuing with the topic of plants this half term. One focus will be on investigating the transportation of water. The children will make predictions and discuss their results using scientific vocabulary. The children will explore the part that flowers play in the life cycle of flowering plants, including pollination, seed formation and seed dispersal. Watch the video to learn more.

Art and Design
The focus for art will be Roman mosaics. The children will look at a range of pictures and patterns of Roman mosaics from artefacts and buildings. They will use these ideas to create their own Roman mosaic.  Why not have a go at home? Use this website to generate your own Roman mosaic.
Cooking
Following a recipe, the children will work together to make Roman bread. They will prepare. measure and cook. A feast of bread will be enjoyed and evaluated. 
Physical Education
Bear will continue to work with the children this half term focusing on summer games. Within this, the children will be playing team games such as rounders and practice skills such as throwing and catching.
 
Please ensure that your child has a full PE kit in school for the duration of the half term. We also have Sports Day to look forward to!
Music
Following ABC Creative Music Online, the children will use shape rhythms to compose music and learn to create music with pitch. 
Religious Education
This half term we will focus on 'Caring for the environment'. The children will explore different stories, parables and different approaches and attitudes towards the environment. Watch the story of Noah's Ark - a story which focuses of God's upset with the world and people's attitude towards the planet.
