Ruthless Romans
To begin this topic, the children will be using their geographical skills to name and locate cities and counties in the United Kingdom and Italy. They will use maps and atlases to support their learning. With this knowledge, the children will be able to make comparisons between the two countries. Test your own knowledge by looking through a map with your child. Don't have a map? Not to worry, the children can access Digimaps for Schools from the Amble Links homepage free of charge.
As historians, the children will uncover why the Romans invaded Britain and the legacy that they left behind. Why not watch this short animated video exploring life in Roman Britain through the eyes of a Roman family.

To gain a deeper understanding of life as a Roman soldier, we will be visiting Housesteads Roman Fort. The children will meet Roman Veteran Rufus Aelius Victor. They will have the opportunity to ask Rufus relevant questions, dress in costume, train as a recruit in an auxiliary unit, explore the site and handle both real and replica Roman artefacts.
Mathematics
Arithmetic and Reasoning: Fractions
Following on from previous work on fractions, the children will find equivalent fractions using diagrams. Play this games using models or if you're feeling confident, without models.
We will also be continuing practising methods to multiple and divide larger numbers using place value counters to 'see' the maths.

Geometry: Shape
The children will deepen their knowledge of 3D shapes and make them using modelling materials. Test your knowledge with this game. How many shapes can you find?

Data and Measure: Volume and Capacity
The children will continue to calculate intervals on scales with a focus on volume and capacity. They will measure, compare, add and subtract.
English
As writers, the children will focus on the story of Romulus and Remus. Become familiar with the story by watching the animation about the brothers who founded the city of Ancient Rome.

Science: Plants
The children will explore and investigate plants and describe the functions of different parts of a flowering plant. Why not plant some flowers at home and investigate the conditions it will need to grow.
