Sharks (Year 3) Autumn 1 2019

Prehistoric Britain

We begin the year with learning about Prehistoric Britain. This is an exciting topic that allows the children to learn about the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age.  The children will begin by creating a timeline to grasp how long the stone age was, and how long it lasted. The children will make their own cave paintings and attempt some cooking!

Maths

During this half term the children will be learning about place value with numbers up to 1000.  We will use lots of concrete objects to help us learn about three digit numbers and will be working hard to solve problems and explain the reasoning behind answers.  The children will continue to practice the times tables learned in KS1 and begin to learn the 4 and 8 times tables. You might like to ask your child to show you how much they enjoy the BBC Supermovers routines!

2 Times Table    3 Times Table   4 Times Table   5 Times Table  8 times Table   10 Times Table

The children will continue to build upon their prior knowledge of 2D and 3D shapes in Geometry.  This includes drawing 2D shapes and making models of 3D shapes.

Science -Animals including Humans

In Science the children will be introduced to body parts related to the skeleton and learn about the functions of each body part within our topic.

RE

The children will investigate how we decide what is right and wrong during RE this term before moving on to look at Harvest.

Reading

It is vital children read regularly in order to build fluency, comprehension skill and to develop a love of reading.  To support this we have a variety of opportunities to read built into the school day although it remains incredibly important that the children read regularly at home. Each day the children’s reading record will be checked to see if they have read the previous evening. If the children read 4 or more times each week they will receive a pink mark.  Once the children have received 6 pink marks, they will choose a book mark and a further 6 pink marks will earn them a book. This cycle will continue for every 6 pink marks.

English

During this half term the children will be learning about the language and structure of a portal story. They will use their learning to create a story set in Prehistoric Britain.

French

In KS2 the children will begin to learn French. We will introduce this new and exciting subject by learning a little more about France.  We will look at the geography of France and may even try some local cuisine! We use Purple Mash through School 360 together with a variety of fun games to learn new vocabulary. This half term we will be learning numbers.

PE

Sharks will have a PE lesson every Tuesday afternoon this half term.  The children need a PE kit in school and this should include trainers and jogging bottoms. Weather permitting we will be outside playing lots of invasion games!
