Year 4 Autumn 1 – The Internet

During this unit the children will apply their knowledge and understanding of networks, to appreciate the internet as a network of networks which need to be kept secure. They will learn that the World Wide Web is part of the internet, and be given opportunities to explore the World Wide Web for themselves to learn about who owns content and what they can access, add, and create. Finally they will evaluate online content to decide how honest, accurate, or reliable it is, and understand the consequences of false information.

Online Safety

The children will learn to use technology safely, respectfully and responsibly; recognise acceptable and unacceptable behaviour; identify a range of ways to report concerns about content and contact in the context of thinking about how online messages can be hurtful.
They will be able to identify how a message can hurt someone’s feelings and say how they should respond to a hurtful message online.

Useful Vocabulary

Internet - The internet is an informal term for the world-wide communication network of computers

Network Router - A router is a computer whose software and hardware are designed to move data between computer networks

Network Security - Keeping a computer network safe from intruders (this could include a firewall or antivirus software)

Server - A computer connected to the internet or a local network providing services automatically to other computers.

Network switch - A device used to build a network connection between the attached computers (allows computers to talk to each other).

Website - A website is a set of webpages that are joined together.

Webpage - A webpage (or web page) is a document from the internet which can be seen with a web browser. Web pages each have a URL or address, which is how a page is found, and is different for every page

Web address - A unique address that directs the computer to a specific webpage. Another name for a web address is a URL.

Web browser - A web browser is a computer program application for reading pages of the World Wide Web such as Internet Explorer, Chrome or Safari

Hyperlinks - The person who makes the web page can tell the computer to show a word or a picture on the Web page as a link. This means that when we click on the link with our computer mouse, the computer will show us the new page we want to see. Most links are blue, but they can be any color.

File- A computer file is a resource for storing information, which is available to a computer program

Permission - Being allowed to do something. The owner of something might give you permission to share it.

Accurate - Free from mistakes

Honest - truthful

Adverts - Advertising is how a company encourages people to buy their products, services or ideas
