Summer2 2025

We will be Designers!
We will become inventors!  Using the skills we have been taught during the Autumn and Spring terms, we will choose something that we want to design, make then evaluate.  It could be anything!  The children can keep their ideas simple or let them run wild, it's the process that is important.  The children will choose the tools and resources they need and work, with help when needed, to produce their masterpiece!  We will be needing lots of junk model resources, so keep an eye on Tapestry with resquests!
We will be writers!
The older Seahorses will continue to be introduced to a new sound each week, preparing them for Monster Phonics in Reception.  We will encourage the children to listen for the sounds they can hear at the start of words.  They will be writing for a purpose, listening as adults model ideas before they go off and have a go at 'writing' a sentence themselves.
The younger Seahorses will play games and do activities to develop their Listening and Attention skills.  All children will play sorting games and do cut and stick sorting activities to build phonological awareness.
We will be readers!
When reading books together, we will have extended conversations about the story, so the children can learn new vocabulary.  Adults will model tracking the words on the pages from left to right to help children to see that print is read in this way.  When looking at books independently, the children will try to turn over one page at a time.

We will be Physical!
This half term the children will continue to develop a comfortable pencil grip and to use scissors more confidently.  Fine motor control will involve using small paintbrushes to add detail to their paintings and models, using their pencil to write recognisable letters and draw recognisable pictures.
The children will also learn to be increasingly independent as they get dressed, ie putting coats on and doing up zips, putting on wellies etc.   The focus will be on the children being able to unfasten their buttons, which can be quite tricky!
Gross motor skills will develop the children's skills in hopping and skipping.  This is also something that many children find quite a challenge.  Hopefully, we will be able to show off our skills during Sports Day!
We will be responsible!
The children will continue to develop their sense of responsibility by helping with setting up the outside areas, tidying up where they have been playing and after milk and snack time.  The children will play with one another, extending each other's ideas.  They will continue to talk about their own feelings in different situations and also begin to understand how other people may be feeling.  The children will learn to respond to feelings in different situations, especially when disagreements arise over sharing toys or resources.
We will be mathematicians!

In maths, we will build on the learning from the start of the year, counting, matching and recognising numbers to 10.  We will focus more on number recognition for the last half term, supporting any children who still find this difficult.  Why not have a number hunt on your way to and from school?  Ask your child to look for different numbers and tell you when they spot them!    In Shape, Space and Measures the children will continue to name some 2D shapes including circle, square, triangle and begin to describe them.  They will explore shapes and begin to choose shapes for a purpose, this will link into their model making, choosing shapes to create a particular effect.  The children will talk about the similarities and differences of 2D shapes.
