Lobsters Summer 1 2025

Come Outside
This half term we will be continuing our learning about the great outdoors. Our focus will be minibeasts and aimals which we might find in the garden. We will be looking at lifecycles and will have some hands on experience of exploring, holding and caring for a range of exciting minibeasts.
PSED

Our theme in Jigsaw this half term is 'Relationships' our learning will be focussed on the importance of our families and friendships. We will explore how all of our families are different and all special. Jigsaw Jenie will help us to think about how we can be a good friend as well as learning more about bullying- what it is and what we should do if we are worried.
Physical Development

In the Lobsters we will be continuing with PE and the children will be pleased to find out that we will be using the large equipment to support our learning about joining movements and balances.

We have seen huge improvements in the children's fine motor skills in particular their drawing and the details included in their drawings, our daily Drawing Club sessions have really helped with this. An area that many of the children still need to work on is letter formation and ensuring that we are forming our letters correctly. Please continue to practice your letter formation at home using the formation sheet which we shared at parents evening.
Literacy
We have now introduced all of the sounds we cover in Reception through Monster Phonics and the children are very confident now at recognisiing them. Our work in this coming half term will be developing our confidence in using these sounds to support our reading and writing. Many of the children are now well in the swing of guided reading where we are reading a text throughout the week to become familiar with it before sending it home for you to practice at home.  It is important that we teach the children to think about what they have read and what it means, this can sometimes be a bit tricky especially when the children are working so hard to decode the words. Practice re reading the full sentences back to your child and encouraging them to do the same, this will help them with their comprehension skills. This is why it is important that the children read their reading books at home as much as possible.
Some of the key texts that we will be sharing this half term will be The Very Hungry Caterpillar, The Bug Collector and Mad about Minibeasts.

Maths
We will be continuing our work all about numbers to 10. Through looking at the numbers and what each number is made up of we will be doing lots of comparison work for example the children will know facts such as '6 is one more than 5 but is less than 7', '3 and 3 make 6' 4 and 2 is 6.' The Lobsters absolutely love Numberblocks and we regularly used these to support our understanding of number. We work practically and spend lots of time comparing numbers and finding different ways of making numbers by combining 2 or more groups.
We will be learning about 3D shapes and working hard to name and describe them. Why not wach the video below to learn more about 3D shapes.

Understanding the World
We are hoping that the sun will be shining lots in the coming weeks. Last half term we had successful green gardening fingers and grew some beanstalks and cress which we were very proud of. We will be learning about how we can care for living things such as insects and also exploring some simple life cycles. We may even have some exciting visitors in our classroom for a few weeks so watch this space t find out more!

Expressive Art and Design
We will be thaving the opportunity to listen to a range of different music and talk about how that music makes us feel. We will also explore some different intruments and see if we can create some exciting music of our own.
