Summer 1 2026

English
The Dragon Machine by Helen Ward
The children will begin by going on a dragon hunt around school. From this, they will create a dragon guide, exploring descriptive and positional language. The children will also focus on writing letters, writing a dragon machine explanation and finish by writing their own version of a dragon story.

Mathematics
It is important for the children to be fluent in the 2, 5 and 10 times tables. We are working hard on this at school but the children will benefit from extra practice at home. Click on the links to learn them through song or test your fluency by completing MathsFrame Multiplication Check.
Fractions:
The children will become confident with finding a half, a quarter and a third of an amount and understand how this relates to multiplication and division.

Time:
The children will revisit telling the time to O'Clock and Half Past from Year 1 and move onto 1/4 past and 1/4 to the hour. They will also learn to tell the time in 5 minute intervals. Children do find telling the time on an analogue clock tricky so it would be really helpful to practise this at home too.

Design and Technology:
The children will be introduced to lever mechanisms and describe their movements. They will find pivots and levers on various mechanisms. They will then use their knowledge to make a simple mechanism with two levers.

History

Enquiry: How do we know so much about where Sappho used to live?

This investigation enables children to explore Pompeii using primary and secondary resources. They will further develop their understanding of the role of archeologists and how we learn about the past using the evidence they find.

Science - Plants

Through observations and investigations, the children will learn about the growth of plants and what plants need to stay healthy. They will record the growth of the plants that they grow over a period of time. This website will provide short videos to support your child's learning.

Ideas for home:
Gardens are so special and are an excellent place to visit together. Why not take close-up photographs of flowers and use a plant identification app or spotting guide to find the name of each plant? You could also buy some wild flower seeds and watch them grow. Alternatively, bake recipes containing fragrant herbs and spices! Cheese and chive scones, cinnamon biscuits and lavender cake are all delicious!

Key Vocabulary:

germination, roots, seed dispersal, shoot, nutrition

Geography
How does the geography of Kampong Ayer compare with the geography of where I live?
During this enquiry, the children will make comparisons between their lives and those of people in a small diverse community in the country of Brunei on the tropical island of Borneo in Southeast Asia. The focus will be on location, homes, weather and schools.

Art

The next stage in our drawing journey is to explore alternative media by drawing on patterned papers.  The children will consider how to make their drawings have impact on a patterned background.

In Art Talk we will study examples of Pointillism and talk about what we can see and how this differs from other styles of art.

The children will use their knowledge of tone to create Puffin Paintings for display at the Amble Puffin Festival.

Physical Education
Ball Skills: Hands

Within this unit, the children will be challenged to combine their developing dribbling, passing and receiving skills in order to keep possession and score a point. They will apply these skills in teams in various games and activities.

Computing

Programming: Quizzes

Children will begin to understand that sequences of commands have an outcome and make predictions based on their learning. They will use and modify designs to create their own quiz questions in ScratchJr and realise these designs in ScratchJr using blocks of code. Finally, they will evaluate their work and make improvements to their programming projects.

Religious Education:
Who is a Muslim and how do they live?
In this unit, the children will find out more about Islam, key beliefs and ways of living for Muslims. The children will learn about the five pillars of Islam and how these upon the lives of believers. They will learn about the importance of prayer and what it means for Muslims all over the world.

PSHE - Jigsaw
Relationships
Within this topic, the children will fit together the six pieces of learning about Relationships to create 'Our relationship Fiesta'. The children will identify different members of their family and understand their relationship with them. The lessons will focus on physical contact, conflict with friends, secrets and people who can help.
