Turtles Autumn 2 2019

Colours of the World
(Continued)
Following on from a great first half term in Turtles we will be continuing with our over arching topic linked to colour. Last half term many of us explored different areas of the North East by completing the St Oswalds Elmer's Great North Parade we managed to find 49 out of the 50 big herd sculptures. We then created our very own Elmer trail around Amble, lots of Turtles and their friends completed our trail over half term!
This half term we will be learning about how colour and light plays an important part in Autumn festivals around the world such as Bonfire night and Divali. We will find out about how we celebrate special family times as well as learning about how other cultures celebrate and looking carefully at the similarities and differences. We will be talking about the children's own interests and experiences linked to this exciting celebration, as well as hosting our very own Bonfire party in school. Through this learning we will be working creatively to create colourful collages and finding out all about Guy Fawkes. Most importantly we will be discussing and finding out how to stay safe when near a bonfire or fireworks. We will even be creating our own safety posters to help others to stay safe too! Why not watch the safety video below about Francis the Firefly to reinforce messages at staying safe around fire at home too!

Read, Write, Inc.

We are now well through the list of Set 1 sounds in our Read Write Inc phonics sessions and already many of the children have started to use these sounds to read and write simple words. This half term our focus will remain on consolidating these sounds and we will be developing our blending (for reading) and segmenting (for writing) skills. We will also be introducing the children to ‘green’ and ‘red’ words. When we read green words we can use our sounding out (Fred Talk) and blending skills e.g m-a-t mat, whilst red words are ‘tricky’ words which you can not sound out such as go, the. The children will be introduced to the phrase– “You can’t Fred a red you just have to know it!” The children have already brought home their word wallets with words which they should be able to have a good go at Fred talking and blending. You can help by continuing to look at your sounds chart and practice saying and writing the sounds. Don't forget to practice the green and red words in your child's word wallet at home as often as you can.

You can help by practising writing numbers using the rhymes which we use in school, the children are very familiar with these and watch the videos which we recently added to Tapestry.
