Extreme Earth
In this geography based topic, the children will gain an insight in to natural disasters. They will learn about the destructive powers of nature, from volcanoes and earthquakes to tsunamis and tornadoes. Through discussion and practical tasks, the children will learn about how and why these natural phenomena occur, and the ways in which they affect people and the environment.

English
Fiction: Action and Adventure
The children will spend time internalising the model text 'Escape from Pompeii'. They will learn the story, understand the characters and unpick the grammatical features used in the text. From this, the children will apply their knowledge to writing their own story based on a natural disaster.

Find out what it would have been like in Pompeii leading up to the disaster that devastated the city by watching 'A Day in Pompeii'.

Non-Fiction: Information Text
The children will use the model text 'Twisted Tornado' to learn the features needed to write their own information text based on our topic of 'Extreme Earth'.

Mathematics
Arithmetic and Reasoning
We will continue to practise our 3x and 4x table with particular focus on 8x table. Support your child at home by learning each table fluently. Play games as well as testing your child.
Knowing our times tables will link to our work on fractions. The children will learn about equivalent fractions as well as adding and subtraction fractions.
Data and Measure
Time will be the focus this half term, specifically the 24-hour clock and time duration. Spend time at home with your child reading the time using an analogue clock as children find this quite tricky.  This game will develop your child's understanding and fluency.
Geometry
The children will recognise, describe and draw 2D shapes accurately. They will also recognise, and describe 3D shapes in different orientations. They will use properties like faces, edges and vertices to describe the shape. Children will also make 3D shapes using construction materials, using the correct mathematical language to describe the shapes they have made.

PE
Lessons will now be on a Tuesday. Please ensure your child has a full PE kit in school for the half term.

French
As part of our topic, the children will be introduced to Weather in French. They will learn new vocabulary linked to clothes and weather, practice pronunciation and play games to reinforce vocabulary learnt.
Continue to practise at home by logging on to Purple Mash through School360.
Science
Linked with our work in Geography, the children will explore different kinds of rocks. They will compare and group together different rocks on the basis of their appearance and simple physical properties. Within this topic, the children will also look closely at different soils and explore similarities and differences. The children will work scientifically by investigating what happens when rocks are rubbed together and investigating the permeability of different soils. Click on the link to watch a selection of videos to learn more about rocks and soils at home.
